Step-type drag bits have a series of steps or stairs that extend from the center to the outer edge of the bit. The steps provide cutting edges, and the bit operates by scraping and grinding soft to medium formations. The chiseled cutting structure will yield a higher rate of penetration than chevron style drag bits, but they are less durable and don’t hold up against harder formations as well.
